Featuring “In Conversation with Pooja Merchant ’10”
WIL Alumnae, I-House Freunde Chapter President, Head of External Medical Affairs at Bayer HealthCare
Due to her bias towards a global mindset, Pooja felt right at home at International House, where she lived for 3 years during her studies from 2007-2010. It was here that she was able to channel her ideas into action by serving as a WIL grantee, Leadership Fellow, Resident Fellow, Resident Members Gift Campaign Co-Chair and also, volunteering for numerous activities such as Sunday supper, fall fiesta, movie nights, etc. This deeply rooted connection to International House and its values motivated Pooja to convince management at Bayer to support and sponsor the WIL program which they have done for the past 5 years. While living in New York, Pooja volunteered her time for WIL training weekends and was a consistent attendee at New York Area Alumni Council events.
Pooja Merchant MD, MPH heads External Medical Affairs at Bayer, a life science company with a more than 150-year history and core competencies in areas of health and agriculture. Driven by her passion for improving healthcare, Pooja applies her expertise at Bayer Healthcare to create shared value through partnerships with medical, public health and patient communities. Bayer’s mission ‘Science for a Better Life’ not only means a commitment to researching and developing innovative medicines, but also addressing unmet needs by truly understanding the customer. Pooja has been driving a concerted effort around patient engagement in order to continue to deliver on this mission.
After completing her Medical studies from India, Pooja earned a degree in Epidemiology at Columbia University and worked at the NYC Department of Health researching HIV/AIDS care in the transgender population. In her previous roles at Bayer, she has provided clinical expertise to the Hematology portfolio and also gained experience in regulatory affairs and organizational/operational improvement. Pooja enjoys running (she ran her first marathon in Berlin last year and is super excited to run the NYC marathon this year). She is also on the committee of the NGO Shadhika which focuses on empowering girls in India.
I am eager to bring my passion, experience and friendships to this role so that together we can continue to be a beacon of hope and embody the motto: Let Brotherhood Prevail. To let I.House and the world know that we have not forgotten. And never will. – Pooja
