About the Honorees

Paul A. Volcker worked in the Federal Government for almost 30 years, culminating in two terms as Federal Reserve Chairman from 1979-1987 under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. He divided the earlier stages of his career between the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the US Treasury Department, and the Chase Manhattan Bank. Mr. Volcker retired as Chairman of Wolfensohn & Co. upon the merger of that firm with Bankers Trust in 1996. He was recently named by President Barack Obama to head the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of International House since June, 1998.

John French III is President of Tudor Associates LLC, a consulting firm assisting nonprofit organizations. He is a retired partner of Beveridge and Diamond PC, international environmental lawyers, where he specialized in corporate, financial and environmental law. He has served as a member of the New York State Environmental Board and was a Founding Trustee of the Hudson River Foundation for Science and Research, Inc. He is a recipient of the Dartmouth College Alumni Award and the Appalachian Mountain Club Distinguished Service Award. He is a member of the Boards of the New York Philharmonic Symphony and the Smithsonian Institution. He is a Life Trustee of International House.

Ibrahim A. Gambari ’71 is Special Adviser on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Issues for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and former Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs from 2005 to 2007. Before joining the UN Secretariat in 1999, he served as the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations beginning in 1990 and was President of the Security Council on two occasions. He also chaired the UN Special Committee against Apartheid. Mr. Gambari received his M.A. in 1970 and his Ph.D. in 1974 in Political Science/International Relations from Columbia University. He was a resident of International House from 1968 to 1971 and is a member of its World Council of Alumni.
