"I would have to travel the world to meet the people I come home to every day at I. House"

Programs & Activities

The cultural and educational programs created at I. House form the core of this unique experience in multicultural living.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell speaking to resident members.

International House is a community of many cultures and a place for exploring the skills and values essential to promoting sound global leadership. The House provides educational and cultural programs of outstanding diversity and members are encouraged to share their ideas and talents and lead activities throughout the year.

Each month, the Office of Programs & Resident Life organizes a broad range of cultural programs, ensuring that residents will always be able to find an activity that speaks to their varied interests - mastering basic Mandarin, discussing current events or performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Some examples:

  • Cultural Celebrations
  • Guest Speaker Programs
  • Performing Arts Programs
  • Language Exchange Program
  • Leadership Training Programs
  • Community Weekends
  • New York City Performances
  • International House Tutorial Program
  • Sunday Suppers
  • Ballroom Dancing
  • Recreational Sports
  • Residents' Council

Each year the Programs & Resident Life staff work closely with approximately fifty Resident and Program Fellows who assist with planning, developing and implementing activities designed to create interaction and provide support for resident members. Applications for these Fellowships are reviewed each spring semester for the following academic year, or as Fellowship roles become available during the academic year.

Program Fellows are selected to lead various programmatic activities and they work as a team with the Programs Office staff to plan the monthly calendar of program events.

Resident Fellows and Peer Counselor Fellows are part of the Resident Support Services (RSS) team at I. House which encourages residents to be actively involved with the community, and helps resident members make new friends and develop natural supports for use here and in the future.
