Fellowship Opportunities
There are a number of merit-based Fellowships available to resident members each academic year. Fellows assist with planning, developing and implementing activities designed to create interaction and provide support for resident members across diverse cultures and thereby carry out the Mission of International House. Program & Resident Fellows are actively involved with the following activities, events and support services which are by no means all-inclusive.

The All Nations Celebration is the biggest cultural event of the academic year that lasts from 7:30 p.m. — 3 a.m.! In collaboration with the Programs Office, these two fellows organize a wide variety of activities that celebrate the plethora of cultures at I. House. Activities from previous years include a performance from the ALLNATIONS Dance Company, an international food fair, martial arts demonstrations, a film festival and a dance party.
The Cinema Fellow is responsible for planning and implementing cinema programming for the House throughout the academic year. Responsibilities include organizing the weekly movie night programs and the All Nations Celebration Film Festival, where film students living at I. House can screen their film projects.
The Cultural Hour Fellowship best represents the myriad of diverse, educational and cultural programs that I. House offers. Two fellows, each academic year, assist in coordinating a monthly program where a different culture is represented. The residents hosting the event highlight the traditional and contemporary life, featuring dances, folk music, art, traditional food and drinks as well as games and cultural exhibits.
Dance Activities at I. House are a great way to meet other residents. A long-standing tradition Wednesday night's Ballroom Dancing lessons. There are also more formal events, such as the Fall Ball in November and the Valentine’s Day Ball in February. A more recent dance tradition at I. House is the International Resident Dance Show performed at the Fall Fiesta in October and the All Nations Celebration in April. These dazzling performances showcase traditional and modern dances from around the globe performed by I. House residents.
Fall Fiesta is an annual event at I. House, organized by two fellows every fall. It is a fashion show that involves participation from resident members and staff who wear many beautiful traditional garments from around the world. Also, a resident-led international dance show takes its audience for a quick tour around the world in dance.
The International House Tutorial Program was established in 1968 by an I. House resident, Don Cuneo, who currently serves as the President of International House. Fellows are responsible for coordinating one-on-one tutoring and mentoring relationships between resident members and children from the local community.
The Language Exchange program offers I. House residents the opportunity to learn or practice a language or to teach other residents their native language in an informal setting at I. House. The fellow is responsible for recruitment of group leaders and coordination of logistics for each language group. Each year approximately one dozen language exchange groups are matched to meet weekly for language practice and instruction.
The Leadership Fellow collaborates with the Director of the Women’s International Leadership Program (WIL) to plan, develop and implement programmatic activities related to the WIL Program. Programming includes weekend leadership seminars and activities for Women’s Week in March.
The NYC Performances Program offers I. House resident and staff members opportunities to enjoy diverse performing arts activities within New York City. Through funding from generous private donors, this fellow coordinates groups of resident and staff members who are offered subsidized tickets to performances at major venues such as the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, City Center and one of many Broadway theatres in New York City.
Orientation & Social Activities Fellow is responsible for organizing orientation activities to welcome new resident members both in the fall and spring semesters. Orientation activities include tours of I. House and the surrounding neighborhood, trips to sights around New York City and an Orientation Night Program which introduces resident members to life at I. House. These fellows also plan a variety of social activities throughout the academic year including cultural holiday celebrations, ice cream socials and parties in the I. House Pub.
Peer Counselor Fellows provide information, referrals, and short-term counseling to International House resident members. Peer Counselors are resident members themselves with significant human service and counseling training.
The Performing Arts program offers I. House residents the opportunity to share their talents and perform collaboratively. The two Performing Arts Fellows organize monthly Salon Nights and other musical and dance performances such as Sunday Suppers.
The Photography Fellow is responsible for documenting life at I. House and various events through photography and coordinates resident photographic activities. These fellows are also responsible for organizing visual arts programming throughout the year, including the All Nations Visual Arts Exhibition.
The Resident Roundtable Fellow organizes monthly, informal panel presentations and discussions focused on international and intercultural topics. Recent topics have included Living in America, Balancing Work, Relationships and Family and Affirmative Action.
The Sports and Fitness Fellow organizes a myriad of sports-related activities for the I. House community. Activities in the Frohlich Gymnasium include group participation in tae-kwon-do, kickboxing, volley ball, soccer and badminton. Responsibilities also include instruction for the use of the Frohlich Fitness Center, which offers an array of cardio and weight-lifting equipment.
Resident Fellows are assigned to each floor of International House. Each Resident Fellow is available to answer questions, organize social activities on the floor, and assure general comfort. His or her aim is to foster community interaction and help resident members to take full advantage of the wide array of resources available within the International House community.
The Summer Program Fellows lead the organization and implementation of summer activities, such as meeting and greeting new residents, performing arts concerts and recitals, cultural events, neighborhood trips, beach outings, and ice cream socials.
The Sunday Supper Fellow collaborates with the Programs Office in the planning and implementation of four Sunday Suppers each year. This fellow’s responsibilities include recruitment of volunteers, development of the program and arrangement of musical performances.
The Travel Fellow plans, organizes and leads trips to introduce residents to the various neighborhoods of New York, recreational trips, and weekend trips.
The Videography Fellow is responsible for documenting I. House life through video. This fellow is also responsible for creating the I. House Video Yearbook, which is an annual video montage of the academic year’s activities.
