"I would have to travel the world to meet the people I come home to every day at I. House"

Academic Year Admission

(September through May)

EligibilityCultural Hour
Resident membership is open anytime during the academic year to full-time graduate students, visiting scholars, interns and trainees who are at least 21 years old. Trainees and interns are defined as recent graduates (within 1 year of completion) or graduate students gaining supervised practical work experience in their field of study. Resident membership can be extended for up to three years if one remains eligible and in good standing with the exception of trainees and interns who are eligible to live
at I. House for up to one academic year.

Admissions Policy
The International House experience offers its members the opportunity to live and learn together in a challenging and supportive residential community unlike any other graduate student housing in New York City. Applicants are judged on individual merit, commitment to the mission of International House and a willingness to share their time and talent with the I. House community through its varied programs. The Admissions Committee selects residents representing as many countries, cultures, fields of study and institutions as possible and seeks representation from the U.S. of approximately one-third.

Length of Stay
Because the length of time a resident member will live at the House will affect their ability to participate and contribute to the community, preference is given to applicants as follows:

  1. for the full academic year
  2. for at least a full semester
  3. for periods of time less than a full semester

When to Apply
Unlike typical graduate student housing, applications are reviewed through a selective process on a regular basis throughout the year. The Admissions Committee begins reviewing applications for the academic year in May. During the summer months, when demand for September admission is the highest, applications are reviewed on a bi-weekly basis. The application schedule for the Fall 2009 semester is as follows:

Room Selection and Availability
Admission may depend on availability and an applicant's flexibility regarding room preferences. Please note that the demand for I. House North often exceeds availability and priority in room selection is given to second and third year resident members. Preference for studio and one-bedroom apartments is given to second and third year resident members and to couples and families applying for the first time. Availability and demand varies for all room types throughout the year.

Room Rates, Fees and Payment

Room rates for both I.House South and I.House North vary according to a variety of factors. These factors include:

  • the size of the room or apartment
  • which floor the room is on
  • whether or not the room has a park or river view
  • Other fees include:

    • $600 refundable membership deposit
    • Technology Fee of $1.10 per day
    • Dining fee of $4 per day for credit in the I. House dining room

(These fees are for the 2008-09 Academic Year and are subject to change.)

All fees are charged on a semester basis and payment is due at the beginning of each semester.

During the academic year, there are a limited number of rooms in I. House South available to Columbia University graduate students who are eligible for housing through the University Apartment Housing Office (UAH). Please contact UAH directly for additional information.
