The Admissions Office team has put together a list of questions and answers organized by constituent. If you do not see your question please email admissions@ihouse-nyc.org.
Returning & Deferred Applicants
Q: Is I-House open for Spring 2021 housing, and is there a deadline to submit the application?
A: Yes, we are currently accepting applications for Spring 2021. We have rolling admissions until rooms in the North building are filled. The South building will remain closed through the spring term due to COVID-19. See all upcoming deadlines for Spring 2021.
Q: What types of rooms are available in I-House North and how much do they cost?
A: All room types in the North building are available. Please review our Spring 2021 Admissions webpage to find out more about the room types and monthly rates, along with the photo gallery, which provides photo representations of each room type.
Q: Which amenities will be available during the upcoming year?
A: Currently available are the Computer Lab, Study Center, 24-hour Claremont Reception Desk, laundry rooms, mailroom and music practice rooms (for music students; upon request via email). The following amenities are closed until further notice: Dining Hall, Fitness Center, Gymnasium, Pub, HR Commons, and Dodge Room.
Q: Will there be programs for the upcoming term and what will they be like?
A: I-House has had to adapt like everyone else, and we are working hard to develop the high caliber programming people have come to expect. During the Fall semester, Residents enjoyed social distance picnic and virtual events focused on health and wellness, the impact of COVID in Brazil, the effect of racism in the US, and many more topics. There were also safe social events such as ice cream socials, virtual coffee hours, language lessons, movie viewing parties, and other safe opportunities for residents to get to know one another.
Q: Can I apply for financial aid and/or fellowship?
A: Yes, we are offering financial aid and fellowship opportunities for the upcoming semester. We will provide information about fellowships to those who are admitted.
Q: I missed the November 30th Financial Aid Application deadline. Will there be another round of applications?
A:If there are funds available after the first round of financial aid applications we will continue to review applications until all awards are dispersed to qualifying applicants. To inquire about award availability please contact the Admissions Office at admissions@ihouse-nyc.org.
Q: How do I re-apply for Spring 2021?
A: Using the login credentials you previously created, sign into the I-House application portal and go to the Spring 2021 application under ‘Apply.’ If you deferred earlier this year, a Spring 2021 application will already be active. Otherwise, you can simply open a Spring 2021 application. Both deferred and returning residents should go through every page of the application and provide the requested information.

Q: I paid the application fee when submitting my Summer 2021/Fall 2020 application, and currently reapplying for Spring 2021. Do I need to pay the application fee again?
A: If you have already paid the application fee for a previous application this year, and now reapplying for Spring 2021, you will receive an application fee waiver.
Q: DEFERRED: My Fall 2020/Academic Year 20-21 application was deferred to Spring 2021. What do I need to do to confirm my interest and when will I get the updated status of the application?
A: Please log into the I-House application portal and go through each step of the Spring 2021 application to submit it, so we are updated on your plans. As you deferred, a Spring 2021 application should already be active on the portal. It is important to go through the entire application and update any relevant information. Please upload new supporting documentation if you meet the following criteria:
Q: If I am approved for housing, what is the earliest date I can move in? What is the latest date I can move in?
A: You can arrive as early as December, but it is important that you email the Admissions Office so that we may update the term of your application and expedite your application review. The latest check in date for Spring 2021 at this time is February 15th. If you need to arrive later than February 15th, it is important that you email the Admissions Office for further information.
Q: I am unsure about my exact arrival date. What do I indicate on my application?
A: We understand that you may be unsure of your exact arrival date due to difficulties caused by COVID-19. Please estimate your expected arrival date on your application. If you are admitted, you will be allotted some flexibility to update your arrival date while confirming your reservation. If you may need to cancel, please be sure to keep in mind your respective cancel by date indicated on your admissions decision email. Deadlines can also be found here under ‘When to Apply’.
Q: I am scheduled to start my program/internship in New York, but I have not received the formal letter from my school or organization. Can I still complete my application for review?
A: The proof of eligibility is important for your application, and your application will not be considered complete without official documentation. The letter should be within 6 months of submission and indicate your full name and the term or dates of your program/internship.
Q: I am interested in the South building as I cannot afford the room prices. Is there a chance the South building will open during the spring term?
A: Unfortunately, the South building will remain closed through the spring semester, but we are happy to announce that we are offering financial aid for admitted residents. The Financial Aid application deadline is November 10th.
Q: Is the construction of the new building still moving forward in Spring 2021?
A: No, the new building project has been postponed for the foreseeable future. We do not have a timeframe for when the project may be resumed.

Current Residents of I-House North
Q: I am currently in room for Fall 2020 only and would like to extend my stay. How do I request an extension and is there a deadline submit this request?
A: If your plans have changed and you would like to stay at I-House into the spring semester (end date April 30, 2021), please log into the I-House application portal and complete the ‘Spring 2021’ application under ‘Apply.’ Unless your document have expired or no longer applies, supporting documentation is not necessary. The deadline for current residents to have priority in extending their stay is November 15, 2020.
Q: I'd like to extend my stay, but not for the full spring semester. Can I still request an extension?
A: Yes, you may still request to extend your stay by logging into the I-House application portal and completing the ‘Spring 2021’ application under ‘Apply.’ *Please DO NOT use the ‘Extension Request’ link. It is no longer active.
Q: When will I be able to select my room for the fall semester?
A: We will make offers of admission by mid-June, and those approved for admission will be able to select a room and pay a deposit by late June.
Q: After I submit an extension request, can I cancel if my plans change?
A: Confirmation of your Spring 2021 application to extend your stay will be sent to you via email by November 20th. Once your application to extend has been approved, it is an extension of your current membership agreement and all policies, including the cancellation policy.
Q: What is the deadline for spring pre-payments?
A: The $600 pre-payment is due by December 1, 2020.
Q: Can I change rooms now?
A: Not at this time. If you are admitted and you select a new room, we will schedule the room change to happen in August.
Q: Can I check out for winter break and check back in January?
A: No, it is against our policy to check out for winter break and return to the same room in January. There should be no gaps in your reservation between fall and spring semester. When completing your Spring 2021 application to extend your stay, please match your expected arrival date for spring with the end date on your Fall Residential Membership Agreement.
If you check out, you will be required to re-apply. Readmission would be contingent on availability, and new applicants will have priority.
Q: I am leaving for winter break. Is there anything I should do or be aware of before I depart?
A: If you are traveling while in residence, please consider these requirements before you travel and determine if traveling is essential. Please note that limiting travel helps to contain the rate of COVID-19 transmission and protects you and others from serious illness.
If you are traveling at any time, please complete the Resident Member Travel Itinerary Form and advise us of your travel plans prior to your departure. Knowing your travel plans ahead of time allows us to prepare for your return as well as coordinate quarantine if necessary.
Q: Are there any spring financial aid or fellowships available to current residents?

A: If your reservation has already been confirmed via email, the best way to request a change in room is to reach out to the Admissions Office. Please do not attempt to change your room selection on the I-House application portal as this will not suffice.

Q: How do I make an arrival request on Calendly?
A: Requesting an arrival date and time on Calendly is a two step process. First, please go to the Admissions Check-In Scheduler on Calendly and find the date and time that best suits your plans. Once you select the time, a button will appear on the right-hand side indicating ‘Confirm.’ Select ‘Confirm’ and you will be brought to another page to complete your request. Please complete all questions and finish by selecting ‘Schedule Event.’ You will receive an email confirmation from Calendly once you have finalized your request.
Q: I am unsure about my exact arrival date due to issues with school, visa or flights. What should I do?
A: If you are unsure about your exact arrival date, please estimate your arrival date to the best of your ability and request your arrival date and time through Calendly. Then, please reach out to us via email at admissions@ihouse-nyc.org and let us know of your circumstance and uncertainty. Notifying us ahead of time is best way to obtain flexibility regarding your exact arrival date and time. Please keep in mind your respective ‘cancel by’ deadline in your admissions decision email in case you need to cancel your stay.
Q: I am scheduled to move into housing soon. Am I required to get a COVID-19 test before my move-in appointment?
A: Please see our COVID-19 Procedures & Quarantine Policy FAQ under "Will I need to quarantine upon check-in?" If you are unsure, please check with the Admissions Office.
Q: What if I’m late to my check-in appointment? Can I still move in today?
A: If you are delayed for your check-in appointment, please email the Admissions Office.
Q: I accepted the housing offer, but it turns out that I won’t be able to come to NYC for the upcoming semester. What should I do? A: If you accepted a housing offer but cannot come to NYC – whether because you deferred your admission to school, will be remote learning, or any other reason – you must contact the Admissions Office by the deadline on your admissions decision email to be eligible to receive a refund of the reservation fee. The deadlines can also be found here under ‘When to Apply’ as well.
If you notify us of your cancellation after the deadline, please keep in mind that the reservation fee will not be refunded.

Q: How do I make an arrival request on Calendly?
A: Requesting an arrival date and time on Calendly is a two step process. First, please go to the Admissions Check-In Scheduler on Calendly and find the date and time that best suits your plans. Once you select the time, a button will appear on the right-hand side indicating ‘Confirm.’ Select ‘Confirm’ and you will be brought to another page to complete your request. Please complete all questions and finish by selecting ‘Schedule Event.’ You will receive an email confirmation from Calendly once you have finalized your request.
Q: I am unsure about my exact arrival date due to issues with school, visa or flights. What should I do?
A: If you are unsure about your exact arrival date, please estimate your arrival date to the best of your ability and request your arrival date and time through Calendly. Then, please reach out to us via email at admissions@ihouse-nyc.org and let us know of your circumstance and uncertainty. Notifying us ahead of time is best way to obtain flexibility regarding your exact arrival date and time. Please keep in mind your respective ‘cancel by’ deadline in your admissions decision email in case you need to cancel your stay.
Q: I am scheduled to move into housing soon. Am I required to get a COVID-19 test before my move-in appointment?

Q: What if I’m late to my check-in appointment? Can I still move in today?
A: If you are delayed for your check-in appointment, please email the Admissions Office.
Q: I accepted the housing offer, but it turns out that I won’t be able to come to NYC for the upcoming semester. What should I do? A: If you accepted a housing offer but cannot come to NYC – whether because you deferred your admission to school, will be remote learning, or any other reason – you must contact the Admissions Office by the deadline on your admissions decision email to be eligible to receive a refund of the reservation fee. The deadlines can also be found here under ‘When to Apply’ as well.
If you notify us of your cancellation after the deadline, please keep in mind that the reservation fee will not be refunded.

Q: What is I-House doing to maintain the facility in light of COVID-19?
A: International House is working tirelessly to stay up to date on public health data and best practices to ensure the health and safety needs of the members of our community. Along with specific protocols for quarantine and guidelines to follow if you have symptoms, the Health and Wellness Services is available to you during your stay to provide support during this difficult transition. Our routine COVID-19 precautions include temperature check upon entry, mandatory masks in public spaces, social distancing (6 feet or 2 meters), frequent handwashing, two people per elevator policy, and hand sanitizing stations. We are further increasing our daily routine sanitation of common, and access to cleaning supplies in these areas is provided by I-House. We have also recently installed an air filtration system in our entry-way vestibule, and working on implementing further precautions to our facilities, including air filtration systems in high-risk areas like the elevator, and a pass-through window to limit contact with delivery personnel.
Q: Will I need to quarantine upon check in?
A: Members will be required to quarantine at International House upon check-in and test negative for COVID-19 as set form below:
1. Domestic travelers from states that do not border New York State must (a) obtain a COVID-19 test within 72 hours prior to the departure from that state, (b) quarantine for 14 days upon arrival to International House, and (c) obtain a second COVID-19 test no earlier than day 12.
2. International travelers must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival at International House and obtain a negative COVID-19 test no earlier than day 12 to end quarantine after 14 days.
3. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis upon the recommendation of a health provider and are at the sole discretion of International House to protect the safety and health of the community.
