Celebrating the Lunar New Year
by Lorena Miranda Gutierrez
Last Friday, I attended the Lunar New Year Gala organized by the International Asian Culture Society at International House. I was enthusiastic because this was my first time celebrating the beginning of a new year according to the lunisolar calendar and I was intrigued about the traditions it involves. Also, because this is one of the most important holidays in Asia and I was fortunate to get a glimpse of this extraordinary celebration.
The Gala started with a reception with delicious snacks from around Asia, I particularly loved the sweet mochi and jelly drinks, and the screening of some Asian films. Then, the main event began, and the audience was involved in a fantastic celebration of art and culture that showcased a diverse and talented lineup. First up was poet Dr. David Austell and musician Kehan Wang, followed by performances by the Greatest Work Trio, Song of Wind Duet, among others.
The evening also featured a speech by Dr. Henan Cheng, who spoke about the importance of fostering mutual understanding and respect through the cross-fertilization of culture. Lastly and my personal highlight of the event was the outstanding performance of the Juilliard School Orchestra, which left the audience in awe and wanting more.
The event was a great success, with a talented lineup of performers that kept the audience engaged and entertained throughout the night. It was great to see how people with different backgrounds and perspectives came together in one place to enjoy and appreciate the different forms of art and culture that were presented. This was a truly unique and memorable experience and I left feeling inspired to start a new year cheerful and optimistic.
