Executive produced by and featuring Laverne Cox, Jacqueline Gares’s film “Free Cece!” explores the incarceration of trans women.
After fighting for her life in a brutal hate crime attack, Chrishaun Reed “CeCe” McDonald was charged with second-degree manslaughter and sent to a men’s prison in Minnesota. Focusing on the story of McDonald’s imprisonment, Gares spotlights the trans people at the forefront of the fight for their rights and lives. When CeCe was released, she emerged not just as a survivor, but as a leader.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s subject CeCe McDonald and filmmaker Jacqueline Gares, moderatored by Activist Tiq Milan.
