NYC Alumni Reunite in Central Park

On Sunday, July 11, 2021 an informal reunion in New York’s Central Park brought together about two dozen I-House alumni from different backgrounds and generations. Anita Haravon ’11 (at right) organized the event and selected a shady spot just inside the park’s Sheep Meadow, which was easy to find so that alumni could come and go throughout the afternoon. Haravon, president of the New York Area Alumni Chapter (NYAAC), brought homemade muffins and welcomed each new arrival. Remembering Bill Hawkeswood ’89 (1951-1992)

When a 32-year-old anthropologist arrived at International House from Auckland, New Zealand, in September 1984, he could not have foreseen the role he would play in the community during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, nor the impact I-House would have on him and his subsequent work. William G. (Bill) Hawkeswood had received a President’s Fellowship to pursue his PhD in Anthropology at Columbia University. I-House Mourns the Passing of Former I-House Trustee Richard D. Simmons

Richard D. “Dick” Simmons, an International House Trustee from 1984-91 and a longtime supporter of the House, died on June 21, 2021 in Alexandria, VA at age 86. Simmons’ service as an I-House Board member partly coincided with his presidency of The Washington Post Company, where he also served as Chief Operating Officer for nearly 10 years, from 1981-1991.
