November is typically the time of year to look back and reflect on the things we are grateful for. Besides the health of my family and friends, this month, I am thankful for the International House Alumni community. Our alumni are comprised of a dedicated group of passionate professionals who, time and time again, have shown up to support International House and its Archives. This appreciation led me to...
I-House Remembers Colin Powell
International House remembers Colin Powell (1937-2021). He was the first African American Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, US Secretary of State, and National Security Advisor to the President. In his honor, we resurface an article that appeared in our 2006 newsletter describing his visit and address to Residents. At this event, he encouraged Residents to seize opportunities to effect change globally and commended I-House for its longstanding commitment to promoting intercultural understanding and cooperation.

At a time when women could not vote and the cultural assimilation of Native Americans was U.S. policy, Ataloa Stone McLendon was a vocal advocate for American Indian rights and proudly expressed her Chickasaw heritage and individual independence. Born near Duncan, Oklahoma, in Indian Territory, McClendon’s legal name was Mary Stone, but her maternal Chickasaw grandmother gave her the name...
Remembering 9/11 in the Archives
September 11, 2001, is a date that defines and divides our history into a “before” and an “after.” It undoubtedly tragically and permanently altered the course of millions of lives and irrevocably changed how we think about ourselves and others. As we approach the 20th anniversary of what remains the deadliest act of terrorism in American history, we have an opportunity to look back, remember, and reflect.
