Statement Calling for the Immediate Release of Jesús Armas ’23
Dear Friends,
It has been more than seven months since our alumnus and friend Jesús Armas ’23 was abducted and detained indefinitely in Caracas. I am writing today to urge his immediate release and safe return to his family.
Last Friday, the United States negotiated a prisoner swap that freed ten Americans and 48 Venezuelan political detainees. Jesús was not among them. Because of his political advocacy and human rights activism, he remains imprisoned and held incommunicado by the Venezuelan government. Jesús has been isolated, tortured, and cut off from any means of legal recourse. His mistreatment should concern every person who values freedom and the dignity of human life.
We at I-House remember Jesús as an active member of our community and a good friend. As a resident, he exemplified our shared values of empathy, respect, and above all, moral courage. I have spoken with his friends and colleagues, including fellow I-House alumni and members of his Obama Scholars cohort. They share in our deep concern for his safety and well-being. We are wishing him strength and resolve, and we hope for his safe return every day.
I-House joins Jesus’ family, his legal team, the Obama Foundation, the McCain Institute, Stanford University, Columbia World Projects, and many others in demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
Please join us in advocating for Jesús’ safe return to his family and friends.
In solidarity,

Sebastian Fries
